Autumn is the ideal time to prepare your garden shed for winter. Rain, frost, wind and condensation can take their toll on timber buildings and the belongings stored inside. These seven practical checks can help keep your shed in good condition.
1. Inspect the roof
Look from ground level for damaged or lifting felt, loose trims and signs of leaking. Repair promptly using suitable materials. Do not climb onto a shed roof; use a competent professional when work at height is required.
2. Protect timber cladding
Check for peeling finishes, exposed end grain and signs of rot. When surfaces are suitably dry, apply an appropriate exterior wood treatment according to its instructions. Keep soil and stored items away from the walls.
3. Keep ventilation clear
Condensation can cause damp even when a shed does not leak. Keep air vents unobstructed, allow wet tools to dry before storage and avoid packing items tightly against external walls.
4. Clear gutters and manage water
Remove leaves from safely accessible gutters and check that downpipes discharge away from the building to a suitable location. Standing water around a shed can damage its base and timber.
5. Maintain doors and locks
Check hinges, latches and locks, tighten loose fixings and use suitable lubricant. Timber doors may swell during wet weather, so address binding rather than forcing them shut.
6. Check the base and ground clearance
Clear leaves and vegetation around the shed and look for pooling water or movement. Keep any underfloor ventilation clear. Seek advice if the floor or structure becomes unstable.
7. Protect stored belongings
Lift vulnerable items off the floor, keep belongings away from damp walls and follow instructions for storing paint, batteries, fuels and garden chemicals, particularly in freezing weather.
When should you consider a replacement?
Repeated leaks, widespread decay, an unsafe floor or structural movement can make replacement more practical than repeated repairs. A bespoke shed also gives you the chance to choose the size, layout, doors and windows that suit your garden.
